My Why:
Having started my own small business selling my art and designs in 2024, I’ll be the first to say that it’s not easy! Despite my 14 years of experience in marketing for large companies with multi-million dollar media budgets, implementing SEO tactics, writing content, creating integrated and complex paid media strategies supporting multiple product lines, budget planning and building robust reporting dashboards… when I started my own business I was quickly humbled and realized I had to learn some valuable lessons on prioritization. Honestly there are so many directions to be pulled in and my head was spinning. My advice, start small and get focused on what really matters, because when it’s all on you… it can be a lot harder to see the big picture and it’s so easy to get overwhelmed with trying to do it all at once. Now with technology evolving faster than ever, AI hype and social media influencers blasting you with clickbait tactics that may not be relevant to your business it’s harder than ever to see through the fog. Good marketing isn’t a quick win, so don’t fall for quick win tactics that don’t build real engagement. Invest in research and really getting to know your customer, their needs and how to truly resonate with them to build long-term engagement and growth. It can take more time, but the rewards are tangible.
After some initial missteps and dead ends in finding my intended audience and breaking through the noise, I’ve learned the importance of being patient with yourself and prioritizing people. Remember that it’s okay that you’re not perfect, we’re not machines, but a good marketing plan takes consideration and building intentional experiences. Here are a few tips to consider to set your business up for success.
As a first step, it’s critical to define your brand identity and research your audience to know who you’re serving and what drives their decision making, so you can speak to their needs and be present where they are.
Ensuring your product or service showcase your care and considers your demographic audience actual needs through real feedback can be critical for differentiation.
Getting the SEO technical foundations of your website and organic online presence set up is a strong first step for ensuring you can be found online, but this needs to be viewed as a long-term investment, it takes time to build authority online. It’s not an overnight magic trick.
Building value based touch-points with your customers with a focus on building your awareness and relationship goes much farther in impacting your LTV but it will take time to realize the value of your investment.
The funnel is real, channel differences in user behavior are fairly predictable, but remember that the flow is asynchronous, customers can engage with you online many times before actually reaching out. While every marketing channels attributable ROI may differ, they do play different roles in the customer journey, from building awareness, to driving affinity, to driving action, understanding these differences and building out your tactics through testing and learning is key.
This foundational work is the backbone to creating a brand story that resonates with your customers. Overall, I believe good marketing is like building a relationship, once foundational pipes are built and value proposition messaging is aligned upon, showing up regularly and consistently where you can provide value to your audience will amplify your message. Garnering good will to encourage new customer growth and repeat customer engagement and drive word of mouth are huge wins.
